CHEYENNE, WYOMING – Governor Gordon recently signed a proclamation recognizing the upcoming 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The proclamation also encourages all citizens of Wyoming to support those who work to end gender-based violence and to learn about the detrimental consequences of such violence. The Zonta Clubs of Cheyenne, Laramie, and the Wyoming Big Horns will be raising awareness about interpersonal violence in their communities during the designated 16 days starting November 25 th .

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence was initiated in 1991 by the Women’s Global Leadership Institute at Rutgers University. Its is recognized by activists around the world as a time to raise awareness in their communities and to call for the elimination of all types of gender- based violence. The designated 16-day period begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25 th ) and ends on Human Rights Day (December 10 th ). More than 6,000 organizations from 187 countries have participated in the campaign.

In addition to the proclamation from the Governor, an additional recognition of the 16-days will be forthcoming through a proclamation of Cheyenne’s Mayor Collins scheduled to be signed on 2 p.m. on November 25 th at the Mayor’s office. Zonta of Cheyenne will be represented at the signing but other members of the public are welcome to attend.

Zonta of Cheyenne will also be holding a Silent Witness March on December 2 nd beginning at 11:45 a.m. at the Wyoming Supreme Court Building. This will be followed by a presentation, beginning at 12:15 at the Laramie County Library with speaker Mary Billiter. The public is invited to join us to help raise awareness about Violence Against Women in our Cheyenne community.
